Freedom -- go to hell

Some people take it to the streets to protest against liberty and freedom. They apparently abhor the 'western' liberalism and democracy. Liberal I mean in the classical sense.

But I wonder, is it not the evil western liberal values of freedom of expression and freedom to peaceful protest that allows them to stand there holding the banner in the first place?

Firstly, there is nothing so western about what we call western liberalism. It is just that the west is somewhat practising it. Philosophers like John Stuart Mill and John Locke has had influence from other cultures and values. Things that we attribute to western liberalism today, such as freedom of speech, religion, tolerance, presumption of innocence had existed in different places to different extents.

Secondly, the west has their own fair share of anti-liberal or freedom-restricting laws and regulations. Some more controversial than others like you mentioned about the holocaust denial. But such hate-speech laws has been abused to make it a political tool to stop dissents in the west even. With modern laws such as hate-speech laws and PATRIOT ACT in these liberal countries, revolutionary people such as Martin Luther would never have seen the light of the day.
